Transfer Report:Sidwell to Chelsea

Player:Steve Sidwell
From:Reading
To: Chelsea
Fee: Free

Chelsea secured their first signing of the season when Steve Sidwell declined his former club Reading's offer of a 4-year 25,000-pound-a-week deal, and signed a contract with Chelsea, whom he will officially join on July 1st, when his contract at Reading expires.

Sidwell was very promising for Reading in the first season, and was one of the reasons why Reading defied expectations of relegation, instead finishing in 8th position, one spot away from a UEFA Cup spot. He plays the role of a defensive midfielder, and is seen at Chelsea as an apt replacement for 34-year-old Frenchman Claude Makelele, who used to occupy the position.

Sidwell only scored 4 goals in 35 games, but the former Arsenal player promised much in the season. Sidwell is 24 years old, and will be seen by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as a good prospect for years to come.
